WAFCS Student Unit Meets in Ellensburg

The WAFCS Student Unit, comprised of students from Central Washington University and Washington State University met for their Spring Meeting on the CWU campus on April 1st.

Dr. Duane Dowd, FCS Department Chair, welcomed the students to the CWU campus and briefly spoke about the FCS program at Central.  After other introductions and an ice breaker WAFCS Public Information Director Donna Graham, presented a PowerPoint about collaborating with other Family & Consumer Sciences organizations. She explained that WAFCS would like students to participate in the WA FCS Annual Conference by assisting with the scholarship fundraiser, volunteering to introduce speakers, help with vendors, and set up of the conference, and by presenting.  Finally, she encouraged the students to retain their membership with AAFCS following graduation.

The first guest speaker of the day was Erin Murphy, a fitness coach. Her presentation was titled, “Let’s Face It: Teaching Can Be Stressful!”  She talked about her background and how we all have to learn to manage our stress, emphasizing health and fitness.

A Taco Bar lunch followed the business meeting and became a time when the students from the two campuses got to know each other a little better.

The second presentation of the day was a panel discussion on “The Experience of Teaching“. The presenters were Megan St. Clair, Lyndsey Slaybaugh, Mary Thompson, Shana Bye, and Sophie Bergford. Each took a few minutes to talk about their first year and memorable teaching experiences.  Following that they took questions from the students. The students appreciated the insights from the panel and what to expect when they get into their own classrooms.

The meeting was wrapped up with recognition of the graduating seniors and new officers.  The meeting was concluded with pictures.
